General

What is GlitterBug®?

GlitterBug® is a hand-hygiene and infection-prevention training system that uses fluorescent lotion, gel and powder plus UV light to reveal where “germs” remain after washing or cleaning. It turns invisible contamination into something learners can literally see.

Who is behind GlitterBug® in the UK and EU?

GlitterBug UK is operated by Food Safety Direct Limited, the official UK & EU distributor for the GlitterBug® training range originally created by Brevis in the United States.

Who is GlitterBug® for?

GlitterBug® is used in schools, universities, NHS and private healthcare, care homes, food manufacturers, hospitality, and by training providers who want engaging, visual infection-prevention training.

Why is hand hygiene training so important?

Around 80% of infectious diseases are spread through hand contact, and effective hand hygiene can reduce healthcare-associated infections by up to 50%. Training helps people understand why technique matters, not just that they should wash.

Has GlitterBug® Potion been discontinued?

No, GlitterBug® UK is the primary distributor of the full GlitterBug® hand-hygiene training range across the United Kingdom and the European Union. As the official regional supplier, GlitterBug UK ensures schools, healthcare providers, food manufacturers and training organisations have direct access to genuine GlitterBug® products, including Potion, Powder, UV lamps and Disclosure Centres. This guarantees consistent product quality, reliable availability and full compliance with UK/EU standards.

Behind GlitterBug® UK is Food Safety Direct Limited, a long-established specialist in hygiene, safety and training equipment. With decades of sector expertise, a dedicated support team and a strong logistics network, Food Safety Direct provides the operational backbone that allows GlitterBug® UK to offer next-day delivery, dependable stock levels and expert guidance for training programmes of any size. How GlitterBug® Works

How does GlitterBug® show missed areas when washing hands?

Learners rub a small amount of GlitterBug® Potion onto their hands, wash as normal, then place their hands under a GlitterBug® UV lamp or Disclosure Centre. Any potion left behind glows, clearly showing areas they missed (e.g. thumbs, fingertips, wrists).

What is the GBX GlitterBug® Disclosure Centre?

The GBX Disclosure Centre is a UV training cabinet that includes a high-intensity LED UVA lamp and carry bag. Learners place their hands inside after using GlitterBug® products; remaining fluorescent particles glow to reveal missed spots. The lamp can also be lifted out to scan other surfaces.

What’s the difference between Potion and Powder?
  • GlitterBug® Potion – a fluorescent lotion/gel used mainly for hand-washing and sanitiser training.
  • GlitterBug® Powder – a fluorescent powder used to simulate cross-contamination on surfaces, tools, gloves, packaging and hands, to show how “germs” spread.
Can GlitterBug® be used for more than hand hygiene?

Yes. Powder and UV light are ideal for demonstrating cross-contamination on surfaces, verifying cleaning effectiveness and supporting wider infection-prevention training in food safety, healthcare and education.

Safety & Compliance

Is GlitterBug® safe to use on skin?

GlitterBug® training products are designed specifically for educational use. GlitterBug® Powder, for example, is formaldehyde-free and intended to be used on hands and surfaces as part of training exercises. As with any product, follow the usage instructions and your local policies.

Do you provide EU & UK safety data sheets (SDS)?

Yes. EU and UK data sheets for key products (such as GlitterBug® Potion and GlitterBug® Powder) are available via the Data Sheets links in the website footer.

Are GlitterBug® products suitable for food safety and healthcare settings?

GlitterBug® systems are widely used in food hygiene, healthcare and care settings to support training and audit programmes, because they visually demonstrate missed cleaning and poor technique without using real pathogens. Always ensure use aligns with your own risk assessments and protocols.

Choosing a Kit

I’m a school / college – which GlitterBug® kit should I start with?

Many education customers start with a GBX Disclosure Centre LED Starter Kit, which includes the Disclosure Centre, a UV torch and a bottle of Potion (around 200 uses). It provides a ready-to-run, visually impactful demonstration for classes and assemblies.

I run food hygiene training – what do I need?

A typical set-up for food safety training is:

  • A GBX Disclosure Centre or UV torch
  • GlitterBug® Potion for hand-washing drills
  • GlitterBug® Powder (often in multipacks) for cross-contamination exercises

This combination allows you to cover both personal hygiene and cleaning effectiveness.

How many learners can one bottle of Potion train?

The 240 ml GlitterBug® Potion bottle in starter kits is typically enough for around 200 applications, depending on how much you use per person.
